WoW Mining - Easy and Profitable Gathering

December 22nd, 2009 | by Wiiabetes Guest Blogger |

If you have any doubts on which profession to train to be your primary profession, an excellent choice would be Mining. Why Mining? This profession is very useful and is a counterpart to a few other professions. It complements Jewelcrafting, Engineering and Blacksmithing. Mining also goes well with other gathering professions like Skinning or Herbalism, simply because you can grind ores, herbs or skin and sell it on the AH to make a profit. Starting to mine?

For beginning Miners there are a few things that come as a necessity. One such item is a mining pick, which can be purchased from any mining supplies vendor which is usually located right next to your mining trainer.

Another thing you should know is where to find veins. Similar to Herbalism, with Mining you have an ability called “Find Minerals”. When “Find Minerals” is activated you will be able to track veins on your minimap (yellow dots). With the use of The Gatherer, which is a very useful addon, you will be able to store all vein locations you have found. You will be able to store the locations of veins found by any of the guild/party member who has the same addon as you.

The most common places to look for veins are the mountain areas, hills and rocks. Skill level required to gather the ore from the vein will be higher or lower, depending on the zone. The starting areas of all classes usually have Copper and Tin veins.

What do I get with Mining?

If you choose Mining you will also get another great ability - Smelting. With the use of Smelting you will be able to create various metal bars from the ores you gathered. When you mine you will also get stones, motes, and sometimes even valuable gems. For the best leveling guide click here: WoW Ultimate Guide

Mining paired with other professions

As mentioned before, Mining is popular because it is a good counterpart to some professions. Jewelcrafting, Engineering and Blacksmithing depend greatly on Mining. The choice of professions is always up to you, however, it is good to have 2 suitable professions paired in order to get the best out of them and skill up faster. If you are not interesting in crafting, you can just pick Herbalism together with mining for increased profit, as you will be able to gather both mines and herbs while flying through different zones.

What else does Mining offer?

Apart from being a very useful and moneymaking profession, Mining is also good for classes that need more hit points, like Warrior, Paladin or Death Knight tanks. With Mining you will get a special passive skill called Toughness. It also provides some additional stamina, which is particularly useful during leveling, while giving a huge bonus of +500HP (50 stamina) at a maxed out skill level. Nice bonus for a tank, isn’t it.

Classes which decide to become miners usually are Warriors and Paladins. The new hero class - Death Knights also wear plate and can come in handy as tanks so they also frequently choose Mining as one of their primary professions. Still, not only the plate-wearing classes opt for Mining. You can often see Warlocks, Mages and even Rogues and Druids mine since their choice of professions fell on Engineering or Jewelcrafting.
