A Diabetics Guide to Wonderful Desserts

July 7th, 2010 | by Wiiabetes Guest Blogger |

Diabetes is one of the most common chronic health conditions in the world. It affects the way your body uses food for energy. Diabetics do not produce enough insulin in their bodies and more than sixteen million Americans have this disease, which accounts for six percent of the population.

Diabetic desserts recipes are greatly in demand. Just because somebody is not allowed to eat sugar or only allowed to eat a little does not mean they do not crave sweet things just like the rest of us. Artificial sweeteners can be used to transform a normal dessert recipe into a diabetic one. This gives the sweetness without the calories or sugar.

Splenda is a good example of a low calorie sweetener. You can also reduce the amount of sugar in a recipe. In some recipes, lowering the sugar by 20% will not have any effect on the taste. Diabetics can eat a limited amount of sugar but they have to be very careful not to overindulge.

Suggestions for Diabetic Desserts

Sometimes you can simply replace the sugar in a normal dessert recipe with an artificial sweetener to make a sugar free recipe but this does not work with all dessert recipes. If there is only one diabetic person in the family, it is possible to make delicious diabetic desserts for everyone because they taste just as good.

Another really good diabetic food idea is to make sugar free jello desserts. If you can make no bake desserts and simple desserts, jello will be easy for you to work with. You might like to make a multi-layer jello dessert or a jello cake. You can also combine sugar free jello with fresh fruit slices, although diabetics need to take care with fruit because some is naturally high in sugar.

You can also get prepackaged diabetic foods but these tend to be quite expensive so making your own sweet treats and diabetic dessert recipes is always a much better option.

Using Flavoring Extracts

You can add flavor to diabetic desserts with flavoring extracts. You sometimes get a bland or metallic taste in diabetic food because of the sugar substitute used so strong flavorings like vanilla or almond can mask this. You can also use flavoring extracts in everyday meals such as some maple syrup flavoring or black walnut flavoring to a pancake recipe. How about adding some coconut flavoring to a sugar free pineapple or orange jello recipe?

If you want to try making some jello recipes for your family, why not use sugar free jello instead of regular jello? It is similarly priced and comes in plenty of fruity flavors such as lime, strawberry, blackcurrant, cherry, orange and lots more. Sugar free jello is sweet and satisfying, free from fat, carbohydrates and calories and you can use it to make lots of different diabetic desserts for the whole family to delight in.
